It’s been 53 days since the T20 World Cup final, and cricket enthusiasts are curious about how Aiden Markram is holding up. “I should give it as much time as it needs,” Markram indicated during a press conference in Guyana on Tuesday. “It was a tough one to swallow at the time. Definitely since then until now, it’s got a bit better to handle; to deal with and to process and put to bed.”

Markram was referring to the heart-wrenching events of June 29 at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. South Africa’s men’s cricket team made history by reaching their first-ever senior World Cup final. However, with a history-making attempt came the agony of an equally significant loss. South Africa was narrowly defeated by India by seven runs in a nail-biting encounter that left the South African squad distraught.

The loss was especially painful given the context of their T20I performance. Out of their 184 T20 internationals played up to that point, South Africa had both won and lost six by the same margin of seven runs, and they had 21 games decided by fewer runs. One match had even ended in a tie. Yet, no previous game had carried the weight of a World Cup final.

“Luckily, I was able to take some time to get away from the game, get away from cricket conversations that would spark the discussion once again,” Markram added, reflecting on his break from the sport. “It was nice to get away from that and to reset. Each individual processes it pretty much to themselves. Probably the most important thing is making sure you’re at peace with how it all ended. So that you can move on and move forward.”

As the South African cricket team returns to the Caribbean to play three T20Is against the West Indies in Tarouba, Trinidad, Markram and his teammates, Reeza Hendricks and Tristan Stubbs, are looking forward to new challenges. These players were part of the squad that took to the field in the historic World Cup final.

. Markram and Stubbs also played in a Test series against the West Indies in the past two weeks, a series that South Africa won 1-0 under the captaincy of Temba Bavuma, who also leads the ODI side.

Markram, who serves as South Africa’s T20I captain, spoke about the dynamics of moving between different formats and leadership roles. “It’s not a hell of a big deal for me. The decision-makers, especially from a white-ball point of view, remain consistent. That allows for continuity in the team. Faces will change and squads will change, but it’s important that we keep driving a consistent message to the guys and making sure that they feel backed as players. And that whatever they bring to the table is good enough for us as a team. So, it’s not too complicated. You take on whatever you get given, and you try to make the absolute best of it and see where it gets you,” he explained.

The T20 World Cup experience has left its mark on Markram, but he’s hopeful for improvement in the upcoming series in Tarouba. He’s particularly looking to move past the disappointing playing conditions that saw the pitch in Tarouba receive an “unsatisfactory” rating from the ICC. During the World Cup semifinals, the pitch’s inconsistent bounce contributed to South Africa dismissing Afghanistan for just 56 runs, laying clear the unpredictability of the ground.

However, Markram finds optimism in more recent performances. In a tour match against a West Indies Championship XI in Tarouba before the Tests, conditions appeared more favorable, with two centuries and six fifties scored. Teams managed high totals of 397 and 408/9, with Markram himself making a significant contribution of 82 runs off 107 balls, including 56 runs in boundaries.

Reflecting on that productive day compared to the sorrowful memory of June 29, Markram acknowledged that a 3-0 series win in the days ahead wouldn’t completely erase the sting of the World Cup final loss. But he believes part of moving forward is maintaining hope for future finals and better days on the horizon. Markram’s journey of healing continues as he leads his team into new battles, holding onto the belief that the future holds brighter, more triumphant moments for South African cricket.
