The Mumbai Indians (MI) roared to a convincing seven-wicket victory against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a high-stakes match at their home ground, Wankhede Stadium. This triumph marked MI’s fourth win in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, propelled by an outstanding century from Suryakumar Yadav and significant support from Tilak Varma during the run-chase.
Given the prevailing trend in the TATA IPL 2024, MI opted to bowl first after winning the toss, facing a formidable SRH batting lineup. MI introduced Anshul Kamboj, a right-arm medium pacer, into their squad, while SRH reintroduced the seasoned campaigner Mayank Agarwal to bolster their batting.
SRH’s innings started aggressively, with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma hitting boundaries regularly during the powerplay. In a dramatic fifth over, Kamboj faced intense pressure as Head hit a six off his second ball. However, in a twist of fate, Head was bowled on a no-ball in the same over, then hit a four off the free-hit and followed it up with another boundary. The powerplay concluded with MI getting a crucial breakthrough when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Abhishek (11 off 16), caught behind.
In the eighth over, Kamboj made an impactful return by bowling out Mayank. SRH struggled as they lost wickets at regular intervals, failing to form substantial partnerships. Apart from their opening stand of 56, no other partnership surpassed 50 runs. Numerous batsmen got off to promising starts but failed to convert them into substantial scores. The dismissal of Head for 48 in the 12th over was particularly significant for MI. At a precarious 136 for eight in the 17th over, SRH had to introduce Sanvir Singh as an impact player.
In the latter stages, it was Pat Cummins’ explosive batting that helped SRH recover, scoring 35 runs off just 17 deliveries, with two sixes and two fours. His valiant effort, along with a crucial 37-run last-wicket partnership, pushed SRH’s total to 173, giving their bowlers a fighting chance. The effective bowling performances from MI were headlined by Captain Hardik Pandya, who took three wickets for 31 runs, and Piyush Chawla, who also contributed significantly with three for 33.

MI’s chase began assertively, with openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma racing to 26 runs inside two overs. However, SRH quickly clawed back by dismissing Ishan, who edged Marco Jansen to slip. In the fourth over, Rohit’s edge carried to the wicketkeeper, and soon after, Naman Dhir fell, edging to first slip off Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the fifth over. At a troubling 31 for three by the fifth over, MI seemed in dire straits.
Enter Suryakumar Yadav, whose brilliance shifted the trajectory of the game. Demonstrating that attack was indeed the best form of defense, he began his innings with an elegant drive for four off Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Tilak Varma took the cue and counter-attacked against Cummins in the sixth over. By the end of the powerplay, MI had steadied themselves slightly to 52 for three.
When the field restrictions lifted, Suryakumar maintained his aggressive stance, plundering 22 runs off Marco Jansen in the seventh over, peppering the boundaries with two sixes and two fours.
Suryakumar’s masterclass continued unabated, giving the SRH bowlers no room to find a foothold. Tilak Varma played the ideal foil, holding his end steady and allowing Suryakumar to fully express his attacking prowess. Last year, Suryakumar had scored his maiden century at the same venue while batting first. This time, he showcased his skills during the chase, leading his team towards a memorable victory while entertaining the MI fans with an array of dazzling strokes.
Suryakumar’s half-century came off just 30 balls, setting the stage for a breathtaking display of power-hitting as he raced to his century with his next fifty requiring only 21 balls. The highlight was the finishing touch when he struck T Natarajan for a six in the 18th over, bringing up his century and sealing the win for MI with 16 balls to spare.
In what can only be described as a flawless performance, Suryakumar Yadav starred with a majestic century, guiding Mumbai Indians to a resounding victory.
