In a high-stakes clash of titans at Chennai, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) convincingly booked their spot in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 final with a solid 36-run victory over the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Qualifier 2. SRH’s disciplined all-round performance ensured their progression to the coveted final, as they defended a modest total of 175 runs with both grit and finesse.

Invited to bat first by the Rajasthan Royals, SRH maintained their aggressive approach from the onset, a hallmark of their campaign in the IPL 2024. However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Hyderabad side as they faced an early setback, losing key wickets within the powerplay. Trent Boult spearheaded the early breakthrough for RR, demonstrating his prowess with the ball. Abhishek Sharma attempted to set the tone for SRH, smashing a six over mid-wicket and following up with a four. But Boult had his revenge, inducing a false shot from the left-hander, which was comfortably caught on the off-side.

Travis Head, adopting a cautious start, partnered with Rahul Tripathi, who took the mantle of aggression at the other end. Tripathi’s instinct to attack remained undeterred, regardless of the bowler confronting him. When R Ashwin came on for his spell, Tripathi commenced with an edgy four through the third-man region and continued to torment Boult and Ashwin alike, dispatching them for boundaries consistently. Tripathi’s enterprising knock of 37 off just 15 balls injected momentum into the SRH innings, albeit short-lived as Boult struck again, removing Tripathi and then soon Aiden Markram, reducing SRH to 57 for three after five overs.

With the responsibility of rebuilding the innings falling on Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen, the duo adopted a measured approach following the early onslaught. Head, initially subdued, found his rhythm with a boundary off Sandeep Sharma in the sixth over. Klaasen, too, got into his stride, launching Chahal for a six over mid-wicket in the eighth over. Despite a couple of quiet overs, Klaasen and Head provided interim stability before Head’s innings was cut short by Sandeep Sharma, guiding a delivery to third-man.

The latter half of the innings saw Klaasen take center stage, steering SRH towards a defendable total. Despite RR’s bowlers, particularly Avesh Khan and Chahal, striking at regular intervals to stem the SRH charge, Klaasen anchored the innings effectively.

. Avesh Khan’s notable over saw the dismissals of Nitish Reddy and Abdul Samad in quick succession. However, Klaasen’s resilience and tactical acumen lifted SRH from a precarious position at 120 for six to a total of 175 for nine. His fifty, brought up off 33 balls in the 18th over, was crucial in providing the SRH bowlers a competitive target to defend. Shahbaz Ahmed’s quickfire 18 runs, as an Impact Player, also contributed significantly. For RR, Sandeep, Avesh, and Boult shared the spoils, picking up crucial wickets whilst maintaining tight economies.

Commencing their run-chase, RR’s Yashaswi Jaiswal was quick off the blocks, hammering Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a six over mid-wicket in the very first over. With the early setback of Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s dismissal by Pat Cummins, Jaiswal continued to fight back, showcasing his class with flurries of boundaries in the powerplay, leaving RR at a favorable 51 for one.

The tide began to turn in the middle-overs, courtesy of SRH’s spinners, who spun a web around the RR batsmen. Shahbaz Ahmed derailed RR’s innings, capturing Jaiswal’s wicket (42 off 21 balls) courtesy of a catch in the deep, and subsequently, Abhishek Sharma caught Sanju Samson at deep mid-wicket off his own bowling. RR was unable to recover from these critical blows, as Shahbaz tightened the screws with a double-wicket over, dismissing Riyan Parag at mid-wicket followed by Ashwin caught behind.

With RR reeling at 80 for five after 12 overs, the odds heavily favored SRH. Shimron Hetmyer, RR’s Impact Player, found no leeway against the disciplined SRH bowlers, while Rovman Powell was also kept on a tight leash. Dhruv Jurel stood as the lone warrior, combating the mounting pressure and reaching a valiant fifty off 26 balls in the penultimate over. However, with the wickets tumbling at the other end and the asking rate climbing, RR’s chase faltered significantly.

The left-arm spin duo of Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Sharma emerged as the pivotal game changers, claiming five wickets between them while conceding only 47 runs in their combined eight overs. Their impactful performances unequivocally steered SRH towards a much-anticipated final against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) – a rematch of Qualifier 1. The title clash promises to be an exciting culmination to the IPL 2024 season, set to unfold in Chennai on Sunday.
