On a day where cricketing fireworks were at their peak, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) swept the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) aside in a scintillating 10-wicket win at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. It was a match that exemplified the raw power and relentless aggression of SRH’s batting lineup, superbly orchestrated by Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. The duo not only helped their team chase down a target of 166 but did so with startling ease, completing the task in just 9.4 overs, underscoring their dominance and fortifying SRH’s reputation for having one of the most formidable batting lineups in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
The match began with SRH’s explosive batting display, particularly during the powerplay – a phase they have successfully mastered throughout the tournament. In a mere six overs, they amassed an astounding 107 runs, effectively sealing the fate of the match. The LSG bowlers, left with little room for mistakes, found themselves at the mercy of the powerful left-handed opening pair who seemed intent on making the game their own.
Remarkably, the fireworks didn’t start immediately but took off in the second over. Having gathered only eight runs in the opening over, Abhishek Sharma set the tone by hitting four consecutive boundaries off Yash Thakur in the next. Travis Head joined the run-feast soon after, tearing through K Gowtham’s third over with three towering sixes and a four, gathering 22 runs. In an attempt to stem the scoring, KL Rahul introduced Ravi Bishnoi in the fourth over, but SRH’s momentum remained unchecked. Naveen-ul-Haq faced a similar onslaught during the fifth over as Travis Head stormed his way to a rapid half-century off just 16 balls, further cementing SRH’s dominance with that over going for 23 runs.
Yash Thakur returned for the final over of the powerplay but was equally dispatched as Abhishek Sharma matched Travis Head shot for shot, propelling SRH beyond the 100-run mark. LSG perhaps hoped for some respite once the field restrictions were lifted, yet the SRH batsmen continued their aggressive gameplay. In the seventh over, Head smashed the first delivery over mid-wicket for a six, while Abhishek soon reached his half-century with a six over long-on.
The boundaries continued to rain in, regardless of who bowled for LSG. Head and Abhishek initially appeared as though their target was set within ten overs, approaching the innings with relentless tenacity.
. It was fitting that Abhishek sealed the victory with a colossal six over cover off Yash Thakur, marking an emphatic end to the chase. Travis Head remained unbeaten on a spectacular 89 from 30 balls, whilst Abhishek closed at 75 not out off 28 deliveries. SRH’s innings included a whopping 16 fours and 14 sixes, presenting the LSG bowlers with a day they would rather forget.
Earlier in the day, SRH’s bowling unit had displayed commendable control and skill, restricting LSG to a total of 165. SRH’s bowlers kept the pressure on LSG’s top order by claiming wickets at regular intervals, preventing any significant partnership from building early on. It was only towards the latter stages of the innings that LSG started to rebuild, thanks to the endeavor of Ayush Badoni, who remained unbeaten at 55 from 30 balls, and Nicholas Pooran, not out at 48 off 26 balls. Their robust 99-run partnership dictated the course of the last 10 overs, in stark contrast to the proceedings of the initial half of LSG’s innings.
At the outset, Bhuvneshwar Kumar utilized his extensive experience to apply brakes to the LSG batting lineup, conceding just seven runs in his first three overs and taking critical wickets of Quinton de Kock and Marcus Stoinis. By the end of the powerplay, LSG was reeling at a precarious 27 for two, necessitating a rebuild effort from Krunal Pandya and KL Rahul.
Pandya aimed to change gears in the eighth over against Jaydev Unadkat, smashing two sixes to push the score. However, once Pandya was run-out for 24 in the 12th over and KL Rahul fell for 29 to a deep catch off Pat Cummins, it was over to Badoni and Pooran to claw their way back.
While Nicholas Pooran relied on judicious strokeplay and experience, Ayush Badoni injected a sense of dynamism with calculated aggression, particularly during T Natarajan’s 14th over when he struck three boundaries and added 16 crucial runs, invigorating LSG’s innings. From that point, the duo ensured that LSG maintained a scoring rate above 10 runs an over, save for another disciplined over from Bhuvneshwar which cost just five runs. Bhuvneshwar capped off his brilliant spell with figures of two for 12, marking a significant bowling performance.
Badoni reached his half-century in the penultimate over, punctuating his effort with a shot that epitomized his aggressive resurgence. The final two overs of the innings went for 34 runs, including 19 off the last over bowled by Pat Cummins, pushing LSG’s total to a competitive yet ultimately insufficient 165. Despite a valiant effort from LSG towards the end, Head and Abhishek were indomitable on this occasion, demonstrating impeccable form and forging a remarkable win for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
