The KKR squad exhibited both grit and flair to clinch an 18-run victory over Mumbai Indians (MI), marking their ninth win of the season. The match, which was reduced to 16 overs per side due to persistent rain, kept fans on the edge of their seats from the opening ball to the final over.
Mumbai Indians won the toss and put KKR in to bat, and the contest got off to a high-octane start. Phil Salt, on the very first delivery from Nuwan Thushara, smashed a colossal six over long-off. However, Salt’s aggressive approach soon led to his dismissal in the same over when he mistimed a shot to fine-leg. The early celebration for KKR turned bittersweet as Sunil Narine shouldered arms to a full, swinging delivery from Jasprit Bumrah, which resulted in the stumps being shattered. Mumbai Indians’ chase was set ablaze by Ishan Kishan’s explosive start. Flourishing in the powerplay, MI raced to 59 within the first five overs, with Kishan amassing 37 runs off just 17 deliveries. Harshit Rana’s fourth over saw him concede 15 runs, and even the usually frugal Sunil Narine conceded a six and a four in the fifth over. KKR’s spinners played a pivotal role in altering the course of the match during the middle overs. Narine’s tactical bowling led to Ishan’s dismissal for 40 in the seventh over, courtesy of a catch at deep midwicket. Rohit’s knock was cut short as he pulled one to short fine-leg where Narine completed the catch, handing Varun Chakaravarthy his first wicket. By the 10th over, MI had slowed to 81 for two, still grasping onto hope with Suryakumar Yadav at the crease. However, those hopes were soon dashed as Andre Russell got Suryakumar to pull one straight to deep square-leg in the 11th over.
KKR continued to pressurize MI with timely wickets, leading to a significant slowdown. Chakaravarthy’s economical spell, giving away only 17 runs in four overs, and Narine’s consistent pressure, resulting in one for 21 in three overs, hampered MI’s run-chase. Crucially, Russell captured key wickets, including Tim David’s for a duck, further tilting the scales in KKR’s favor.
Tilak Varma stood out for MI, fighting valiantly to keep them in the contest as the required run rate climbed. With 41 needed off the last two overs, Naman Dhir’s aggressive batting momentarily rekindled MI’s chances. Nevertheless, Harshit Rana’s composed final over, where he dismantled Dhir and ended Tilak’s resistance, sealed the deal for KKR.
