Despite Punjab Kings falling short by just nine runs, Sharma’s performance has been a major talking point.
The stage was set for a high-octane match as Mumbai Indians, riding on a formidable 78-run knock from Suryakumar Yadav, posted a challenging total of 192 runs for the loss of seven wickets. With 193 runs needed from their 20 overs, Punjab Kings showed they were up for the chase. Sharma, alongside Shashank Singh who scored a solid 41, was the highlight of the chase, scoring a rapid 61 runs from just 28 balls, including seven maximums.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Sharma shared, “It was my dream to hit a sweep shot off Jasprit Bumrah. I have been practising these shots in the nets.” Indeed, his rehearsal paid off when in the 13th over, seizing on Bumrah’s rare overstep, Sharma expertly maneuvered the ball over the boundary for a six.
Despite the thrilling ending to their innings, Punjab Kings were bowled out for 183. The bowling spells of Bumrah, who took 3/21, and Gerald Coetzee, who also snatched 3 wickets for 32 runs, were instrumental in halting Punjab’s charge. However, the match was not without its heroes for Punjab. Sharma’s audacious knock added a glorious chapter to his burgeoning cricketing career and left a lasting impression on the spectators.
Sharma also took an opportunity to credit the guidance of Sanjay Bangar, the team’s Head of Cricket Development, whose advice significantly impacted his performance. Reflecting on a conversation they had, Sharma revealed, “Sanjay [Bangar] sir told me that ‘you’re not a slogger; you play proper cricketing shots and you should focus on [honing] that.’ That small statement and a show of confidence from him has made a huge difference for me and turned my game.”
