Overcoming severe stomach pain and physical discomfort, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pacer Mohammed Siraj displayed immense resilience by taking part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) clash against the Gujarat Titans (GT) on Saturday. Despite his health struggles, which included loose motions, Siraj kept in mind the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, believing that game time was essential. His faith and perseverance were paid off, possibly with divine intervention as he suggested, “maybe the almighty gave me the power.”
Siraj’s contribution to the game was critical as his figures of 2/29 assisted RCB in bowling out the opposing team for a paltry 148 runs, a total RCB comfortably chased down with 38 balls to spare, securing a four-wicket victory. This performance underlines the importance of Siraj’s role within the team, especially as he has claimed eight wickets at an average of 44.00 in 10 matches during IPL 2024 so far, boasting the best figures of 2/26.
In an IPL video alongside teammate Yash Dayal, Siraj opened up about his condition and the supportive environment within the team, particularly highlighting his interaction with cricket luminary Virat Kohli. Siraj pointed out that Kohli’s familiarity with him over the past eight years and his readily available advice contribute to halving the difficulties a bowler faces. “When you have good communication with such a legend of the game then half the difficulty gets reduced straightaway as a bowler,” Siraj expressed.
Further showing camaraderie within the team, Siraj praised newcomer Yash Dayal for his excellent handling of the new ball, indicating that such performances enhance confidence, particularly under challenging circumstances. Dayal’s numbers are also promising, showcasing 10 wickets in 10 IPL 2024 matches at an average of 33.80.
Moreover, Dayal spoke about the self-assurance he carried from his successes in domestic cricket, and his focus on fielding dynamics helped him set the right field against the hitters’ preferences, letting him execute his strategies effectively.
RCB showed strategic insight by choosing to field first upon winning the toss. GT appeared to struggle at 19/3 but managed a comeback through significant partnerships, first between Shahrukh Khan and David Miller, followed by Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan. GT’s attempted rally was halted by RCB’s consistent wicket-taking, leading to their dismissal for 147. Dayal, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Siraj, Cameron Green, and Karn Sharma contributed to the wickets.
The chase saw a thrilling start with RCB openers Faf Du Plessis and Virat Kohli creating a formidable 92-run stand, but a mid-innings wobble courtesy of spells from Joshua Little and Noor Ahmed brought on some panic. Nevertheless, composure from Dinesh Karthik and Swapnil Singh ensured RCB crossed the finish line with time to spare.
While this victory firmly places RCB as a formidable side in the IPL 2024 tournament, Siraj’s narrative of combating physical ailments to play for his team will be remembered as a testament to his tenacity and dedication, characteristics that reflect the spirit of cricket and sporting excellence.
