In a landmark event at Eden Gardens, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) became the first team to qualify for the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoffs, following an exhilarating 18-run victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI). This win marks KKR’s ninth victory of the season and solidifies their dominance in this year’s tournament.
Despite the persistent rain throughout the evening, dedicated fans remained glued to their seats, hoping for a conclusion to the curtailed contest. The weather ultimately reduced the match to a 16-overs-a-side affair. Right from the toss, MI decided to field, setting the stage for what would become a blockbuster start.
Phil Salt of KKR immediately lit up the atmosphere by smashing the first ball of the match, bowled by Nuwan Thushara, for a colossal six that soared over long-off. Although Salt attempted to replicate his success by targeting fine leg later in the over, he succeeded only in skying the ball, ending his brief but explosive innings. This early excitement was followed by Jasprit Bumrah entering the crease for MI. With his first ball, Bumrah bowled a full delivery that swung sharply to dislodge Sunil Narine’s stumps, leaving KKR at a shaky 10 for two.
Under pressure early on, KKR looked to Venkatesh Iyer for stability. Reflecting the adage that ‘attack is the best form of defense,’ Iyer counter-attacked aggressively, particularly in Bumrah’s fourth over, hitting two fours and a six. This aggressive batting momentarily alleviated the pressure off KKR, but the team continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. Shreyas Iyer was bowled by Anshul Kamboj soon after, leaving the team’s hopes on Nitish Rana, who was returning from injury.
Throughout KKR’s innings, partnerships failed to flourish due to the loss of wickets at regular junctures. Despite the turbulence, valuable individual contributions helped KKR post a competitive total. Venkatesh Iyer’s scintillating 21-ball 42 was the innings’ centerpiece, although his aggressive attempt to further elevate the score ended when Suryakumar Yadav caught him off Piyush Chawla in the ninth over. Andre Russell briefly showcased his formidable power-hitting abilities, sending his second ball over long-on for a characteristic six. Meanwhile, Nitish Rana maintained the tempo with regular boundary hits, but fell victim to a run-out, departing for 33 in the 12th over.

Toward the end, handy contributions from lower-order batsmen bolstered KKR’s total to 157 for seven. Russell added 24 off 14 balls, Rinku Singh chipped in with 20 off 12 balls, and Ramandeep Singh’s unbeaten 17 off eight balls, including a six off the last delivery, concluded KKR’s innings. For MI, Chawla emerged as the pick of the bowlers with two wickets for 28 runs in three overs, while Bumrah, reclaiming the purple cap, and Kamboj supported him with two for 39 and one for 24, respectively.
MI began their chase with an explosive start, thanks to Ishan Kishan who raced to 37 off only 17 balls, propelling MI to 59 in the first five overs. Harshit Rana and even seasoned campaigner Sunil Narine faced the brunt of MI’s onslaught, going for significant runs. However, the tide began to turn when KKR spinners put the brakes on MI’s scoring. Narine dismissed Ishan for 40 in the seventh over, then helped Varun Chakravarthy dislodge Rohit Sharma, who was caught at short fine-leg soon after.
By the halfway mark, MI saw their progress stifled at 81 for two. Suryakumar Yadav appeared to anchor the innings, but Andre Russell derailed MI’s chase by having him caught at deep square-leg in the 11th over. KKR’s bowlers continued to exert control, taking crucial wickets and maintaining a tight run rate. Varun Chakravarthy’s spell proved pivotal, with figures of 17 for two in his four overs. Narine contributed effectively as well, claiming one wicket for 21 runs in his three overs, supported by Russell who chipped in with crucial wickets, notably dismissing Tim David for a duck.
As the required run rate escalated, Tilak Varma valiantly kept MI in the hunt. But with 41 needed off the final two overs, MI needed a miraculous finish. Naman Dhir reignited their hopes with an aggressive batting display, but with 22 required in the last over, Harshit Rana held his nerve, dismissing Dhir and then ending Tilak’s resistance, sealing the win for KKR.
The Eden Gardens crowd erupted in celebration, marking another memorable chapter in what has been a sensational season for KKR. The team now leaves their home ground with an impressive record of five wins in seven matches, confidently heading into the playoffs.
