Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made history by becoming the first team in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 to secure a spot in the playoffs. The thrilling encounter unfolded at their home ground, Eden Gardens, where KKR clinched an 18-run victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) – marking their ninth win of the season.
Due to unruly weather, the game was shortened to 16 overs per side. MI won the toss and elected to field, setting the stage for a fascinating showdown. The opening of the match was nothing short of sensational as Phil Salt blasted the initial ball, bowled by Nuwan Thushara, for a towering six over the long-off boundary. However, Salt’s aggressive approach soon led to his downfall as he attempted another big shot over fine-leg but only managed to send the ball skywards, where it was safely pouched by a fielder in the deep.
The second over saw Jasprit Bumrah taking over the bowling duties. A full delivery sneaked past the defenses of Sunil Narine, rattling the stumps, leaving KKR reeling at 10 for two and in apparent trouble.
However, Venkatesh Iyer stepped up to the occasion, embodying the adage that attack is the best form of defense. KKR might have been on the backfoot, but Venkatesh’s aggressive stroke play delivered crucial counter-punches. The fourth over, bowled by Bumrah, became significant for KKR as Venkatesh recovered from an injury scare to launch a counterattack, scoring two fours and a six to bolster the innings.
Shreyas Iyer’s stint was cut short when an Anshul Kamboj delivery bowled him around his legs. With Nitish Rana, returning from injury, joining forces with Venkatesh, KKR looked to rebuild their innings.
Throughout KKR’s innings, the lack of sizeable partnerships was a concern as wickets fell at regular intervals. Despite this, key contributions kept the scoreboard moving. Venkatesh’s 21-ball 42 set the tempo, though his dismissal by Suryakumar Yadav off Piyush Chawla in the ninth over was a setback. Andre Russell’s entry into the fray saw an immediate impact as he launched his second ball for a six. Nitish contributed effectively with regular boundaries, maintaining the innings’ momentum before being run-out on 33 in the 12th over.

KKR’s useful middle and lower-order cameos pushed them close to 160. Russell’s 24 off 14 balls, Rinku Singh’s 20 from 12, and a crucial unbeaten 17 from Ramandeep Singh, inclusive of a six off the last ball, secured a total of 157 for seven. Chawla was MI’s most effective bowler with figures of two for 28 in his three overs. Bumrah regained his dominance with the purple cap, claiming two for 39 from four overs, while Kamboj impressed with an economical one for 24 in his three.
MI began their chase with Ishan Kishan blazing through the powerplay, notching up 37 off just 17 balls, propelling MI to 59 in the first five overs. Harshit Rana faced the brunt of the onslaught in the fourth over, while even Narine conceded boundaries in the fifth. The partnership put MI on course for victory, with Ishan looking in excellent form while Rohit Sharma supported with tactical strike rotation.
A disciplined performance by KKR’s spinners brought them back into the game, characterized by economic overs and key wickets. Narine’s breakthrough came when he dispatched the dangerous Ishan for 40 in the seventh over. Rohit’s departure followed shortly, caught at short fine-leg off Chakaravarthy’s bowling, reducing MI to 81 for two by the 10th over. MI’s hopes rested on Suryakumar Yadav until a key dismissal by Russell, caught at deep square-leg, dashed those aspirations in the 11th over.
With economical bowling, KKR continued to stifle MI’s batting. Chakaravarthy’s spell was particularly notable, delivering four overs for 17 runs and two crucial wickets, while Narine finished his three overs with one for 21. Russell’s wicket-taking extended to Tim David, who fell without scoring, further aiding KKR’s cause.
Despite a valiant effort by Tilak Varma, pushing MI’s chase as the required rate climbed, and late aggressive shots by Naman Dhir, the task proved too steep. Needing 22 from the last over, Harshit Rana delivered a game-sealing spell, dismissing Dhir and subsequently Tilak, culminating in a match-defining performance.
The Eden Gardens crowd erupted in joy, celebrating yet another victory in what has been an exceptional season for KKR. With five wins out of seven home games, KKR leaves their ground on a high, as they set sights on further success in the upcoming playoffs.
