Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) achieved a significant milestone in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, becoming the first team to secure a playoff spot. This remarkable achievement came on their home turf at Eden Gardens, where KKR triumphed over the formidable Mumbai Indians (MI) by an 18-run margin, marking their ninth victory of the season.
The evening’s contest was not spared by the fickle weather, as persistent rain forced the match to be reduced to a 16-overs-a-side affair. Mumbai Indians, winning the toss, opted to field first, setting the stage for an explosive start to the match. Phil Salt, facing the first delivery bowled by Nuwan Thushara, launched it high over the long-off boundary for an impressive six. However, Salt’s aggressive approach led to his downfall shortly after, as he attempted to clear the fine-leg field but only succeeded in skying the ball. The shot was caught by a fielder in the deep, signaling a rocky start for KKR.
Jasprit Bumrah, who took charge in the second over, capitalized on the momentum. His very first ball saw Sunil Narine make an unfortunate decision to leave a full-length delivery alone. The ball swung in sharply, shattering the stumps and leaving KKR in dire straits at 10 for two.
Amidst the mounting pressure, Venkatesh Iyer adopted an aggressive strategy in the ensuing overs, showcasing that attack can indeed be the best form of defense. Despite being on the backfoot, Venkatesh kept KKR in the contest with a series of strategic strikes. In the fourth over, bowled by Bumrah, Venkatesh initially faced a minor injury scare but soon regained his composure. He charged at the bowler, smashing two boundaries and a six, stabilizing the innings to some extent. However, KKR’s stability was short-lived as Shreyas Iyer fell victim to Anshul Kamboj’s precision, getting bowled around his legs.
Nitish Rana, returning from an injury, joined forces with Venkatesh, but substantial partnerships remained elusive as wickets continued to tumble. Nonetheless, crucial contributions kept the scoreboard ticking. Venkatesh’s aggressive innings of 42 runs off just 21 balls laid a solid foundation despite ending prematurely as he was caught by Suryakumar Yadav off Piyush Chawla in the ninth over.
The arrival of Andre Russell added a spark to the innings. In quintessential Russell fashion, he dispatched the second ball he faced over long-on for a massive six. Meanwhile, Nitish Rana played a pivotal role in maintaining the innings’ tempo, securing boundaries regularly. However, his resilience was cut short as he was run out for 33 in the 12th over, leaving KKR at a crossroads once again.

The innings witnessed a series of impactful cameos in the middle and towards the end, propelling KKR closer to a competitive total of 160. Russell’s quickfire 24 off 14 balls, combined with Rinku Singh’s 20 off 12 balls, including two sixes, and Ramandeep Singh’s unbeaten 17 off eight balls, featuring a six on the last ball, were instrumental in guiding KKR to a total of 157 for seven. Among MI’s bowlers, Piyush Chawla emerged as the most successful, taking two wickets for 28 runs in his three overs, while Bumrah regained the purple cap with figures of two for 39.
The chase by Mumbai Indians began on a positive note, courtesy of Ishan Kishan’s aggressive start in the powerplay. Scoring 37 off just 17 balls, Ishan set the foundation for MI’s pursuit. Harshit Rana, bowling the crucial fourth over, faced a battering, conceding 15 runs. Meanwhile, the seasoned Sunil Narine, coming on to bowl the fifth over, wasn’t spared either, with both a six and a four taken off him.
However, the middle overs witnessed a strategic shift as KKR’s spin duo led an impressive comeback. Narine, breaking through the partnership, had Ishan caught at deep midwicket for 40 in the seventh over. Rohit Sharma too fell into the KKR spin web, giving Varun Chakaravarthy his first wicket. At the 10-over mark, MI, who once seemed to cruise, found themselves at 81 for two, relying on Suryakumar Yadav to finish the job. But hope quickly dwindled as Russell outfoxed Suryakumar, resulting in a crucial catch at deep square-leg in the 11th over.
The fall of wickets and the slowing run rate caused MI to lose their initial momentum. Varun Chakaravarthy, with figures of two wickets for just 17 runs from his four overs, and Narine, who took a wicket for 21 in his bowler’s quota, played crucial roles in tying down the MI batting. Russell’s contribution with the ball, getting the key wicket of Tim David for no score, was pivotal in KKR’s defense.
On the MI batting side, Tilak Varma stood resilient, trying to keep his team in the hunt even as the required run rate soared. As the equation boiled down to 41 runs needed off the last two overs, Naman Dhir brought fresh hope to MI’s camp with aggressive stroke play. However, the final over demanded 22 runs, and Harshit once again rose to the occasion. He orchestrated a brilliant over, dismissing Dhir and extinguishing Varma’s fight, ensuring a memorable victory for KKR.
The Eden Gardens crowd witnessed another triumphant performance, capping off a satisfying season at home for the Knight Riders. With five wins in seven matches at Eden Gardens, KKR solidified their reputation as formidable contenders in this TATA IPL season. As the cheers echoed through the iconic stadium, KKR fans dared to dream of even greater glory in the playoffs.
