Following a critical examination of the controversial “impact player” rule by India’s cricket team captain, Rohit Sharma, the Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman, Arun Dhumal, has expressed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is willing to re-evaluate the rule post the current IPL season. Sharma, who is not in favor of this recently implemented rule, highlighted the potential drawbacks it brings especially to the all-rounder’s role within the teams.

The “impact player” rule was first tested in the 2022-23 Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament and subsequently introduced to the IPL. Having been a part of the marquee T20 tournament for nearly two seasons now, the rule has attracted varied feedback, primarily skewing towards criticism from the cricketing community. The essence of the rule allows teams to substitute a player during a match, akin to football, aiming at adding dynamic strategic elements to the game.

Addressing the feedback, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal told The Telegraph, “Given the range of observations we’ve received, a thorough review is certainly on our agenda. Post-season, a comprehensive discussion with all stakeholders will be held to decide the future course of this rule.” He emphasized that the permanence of the rule is not set in stone and that any rule has its advantages and disadvantages.

Rohit Sharma, during a podcast called ‘Club Prairie Fire’, shared his concerns about the rule’s impact on the game’s traditional playing format and its detriment to the role of all-rounders like Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar, who have seen reduced opportunities to bowl. “I am not a big fan of the impact sub rule. It is holding back all-rounders, eventually cricket is played by 11 players, not 12. You are taking out so much from the game to make it entertaining for people around. From a pure cricketing aspect, it’s not a good thing,” Sharma stated.

Explaining further, Sharma elaborated how the rule can disrupt the natural game flow. “The option to bring an impact player based on the game’s progress and pitch behavior is indeed entertaining, but it diminishes the necessity of a balanced team. If a team bats well and doesn’t lose wickets early, they tend to add another bowler instead of a batter, skewing the usual team composition,” he added.

The IPL has long been known for its innovative approaches that often influence cricket globally. However, this particular adaptation has sparked debates about the true essence of cricket and the balance between entertainment and sport integrity. Critics argue that while innovations can make the game more engaging for spectators, they must not compromise the core skills and roles inherent to cricket.

As the IPL 2024 continues, all eyes will be on how teams utilize this rule and the final verdict from the BCCI post the season’s conclusion. It remains to be seen whether the feedback from prominent figures like Rohit Sharma will lead to amendments or even a complete retraction of the impact player rule.
