In a highly-anticipated clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the Delhi Capitals (DC) secured a dramatic 19-run victory against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Match 64 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. On a pitch that favored the batsmen, DC posted a formidable total of 208 runs, thanks to a veritable team effort. Despite a spirited chase from LSG’s batsmen, DC’s bowlers held their nerve to clinch the crucial two points.
Winning the toss, LSG skipper KL Rahul opted to bowl first, a decision that seemed justified in the opening over. The power-packed Jake Fraser-McGurk intended to set the tone with a commanding six, but failed to execute a clean shot, resulting in a catch at long-on off Arshad Khan’s bowling.
With DC on the back foot early, Abishek Porel took center stage, counter-attacking with precision and flair. The second over saw Porel showcasing his skills with an upper-cut six off Mohsin Khan. Porel then unleashed a torrent of boundaries in the next over from Arshad, collecting 21 runs, highlighted by a majestic cover-drive. Yudhvir Singh felt the batting onslaught as well, conceding 16 runs in the fourth over with Shai Hope joining in the run-fest. DC ended the powerplay with a flourish, plundering 17 runs off Naveen-ul-Haq’s over, including a flat-six over fine-leg by Porel.
After the electrifying powerplay, the scoring rate dipped slightly. Hope contributed significantly with 38 off 27 balls, including a straight strike for six off Ravi Bishnoi, before being caught by Rahul at cover. During this period, Porel reached his half-century off just 21 balls. LSG managed to mount a mini-comeback, dismissing Porel for 58 in the 12th over, a crucial wicket that momentarily hindered DC’s momentum.
However, the innings found stabilization and propulsion through Tristan Stubbs and Rishabh Pant. Pant contributed with 33 off 23 balls, playing his characteristic leg-side shots and adding five fours to the tally. His dismissal in the 17th over allowed Stubbs to take charge. Stubbs’s unbeaten 57 off 25 balls included a crucial phase where he took on Arshad, plundering a six and two fours, which helped DC surge past the 200-mark. The final overs saw DC gather 45 runs, with Stubbs reaching his fifty off 22 balls, culminating the innings at 208 for four.

The chase began explosively for LSG but was quickly stymied by veteran DC bowler Ishant Sharma, who delivered a masterful spell in the powerplay. He claimed three pivotal wickets, including the prized one of Rahul, who holed out to cover. Quinton de Kock and Marcus Stoinis were summarily dealt with, as LSG found themselves floundering at 24 for three.
Nicholas Pooran, however, injected life back into the chase with an aggressive intent, particularly targeting the leg-side. Axar Patel’s wicket of Stoinis was offset by a costly over, yielding 20 runs as Pooran hit two fours and two sixes. Despite Ishant trapping Deepak Hooda leg-before early in the next over, LSG amassed 59 runs in the powerplay but, crucially, lost four wickets. Pooran emerged as LSG’s lynchpin, racing to 32 off just 11 balls.
LSG’s pursuit seemed hopeful while Pooran stayed at the crease. Regular boundaries kept them in contention, even after Ayush Badoni’s dismissal. Pooran attained his fifty in rapid fashion, but his aggressive gameplay eventually led to his downfall. He fell to a brilliant low catch by Patel off Mukesh Kumar, denting LSG’s hopes as they slumped to 101 for six.
Even as defeat loomed large, Arshad Khan breathed life into the LSG innings with a fearless and calculated hitting spree. His rapid 25-ball fifty kept the chase on track. Contributions from Yudhvir Singh, including a six and a four, lent brief hope, but DC’s bowlers remained resolute. Mukesh Kumar and Rasikh Salam expertly curtailed LSG’s chase in the final two overs, not leaking any boundaries and keeping Arshad in check.
With this impressive victory, DC has ascended to the fifth spot in the IPL points table. While their path to the playoffs remains uncertain, contingent on other match outcomes, this win has certainly ignited their campaign. LSG, on the other hand, will need to regroup quickly as they eye a favorable finish to their season.
