In an unprecedented move within the frenzy of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has requested a pause from his duties at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Maxwell, who has been grappling with both poor form and an injury to his thumb, approached RCB management himself to sit out the upcoming game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
Maxwell’s current season has been alarmingly underwhelming, marked by three dismissals at zero in just six matches. With a total of only 32 runs so far, his average stoops at a meager 5.33, a shadow of his potential seen in previous years. Despite initial speculation, Maxwell clarified that his decision wasn’t solely spurred by the thumb injury sustained in the last match. Instead, it comes from a reflective approach focused on mental and physical recuperation aimed at revitalizing his game for critical phases of the tournament.
“For me, personally, it was a pretty easy decision,” Maxwell commented regarding his self-imposed hiatus. He recounted to Faf du Plessis, the current RCB captain, and other coaching staff that perhaps it was judicious to consider other players for his slot. Reflecting on his personal experiences, Maxwell added, “I have been in this situation in the past where you can keep playing and get yourself deeper into a hole. I think now is actually a good time for me to give myself a bit of a mental and physical break, get my body right.”
Maxwell’s strategic withdrawal is not just a personal retreat but a tactical space-making for others in the team to step up. “We have had a pretty big deficiency straight after the powerplay, which has been my area of strength over the last couple of seasons. I felt like I wasn’t contributing in a positive way with the bat, and with the results and the position we find ourselves on the table, I think it’s a good time to give someone else an opportunity to show their wares, and hopefully, someone can make that spot their own,” he elucidated further during a post-match interaction.
It is not the first time Maxwell has faced such challenging phases. His stint with the Punjab franchise in IPL 2020 mirrored similar frustrations—compiling only 108 runs across 11 innings, marking an average of 15.42 and a striking absence of any maximums. Yet, leading into IPL 2024, Maxwell seemed rejuvenated, coming off a splendid run of 552 runs from 17 T20 matches starting from November 2023, with an average of 42.46 and a strike rate of 185.85.
