Abhishek Sharma, the emerging star opener for SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), shared some candid insights after his team’s awe-inspiring but somewhat frustrating performance against the Delhi Capitals on April 20. The match, which ended with SRH posting an enormous total of 266/7, left Sharma feeling that despite the impressive scoreline, there were still more runs left on the field, particularly after a PowerPlay that saw the team hammering 125 runs without any loss.

Following the PowerPlay, Sharma, in a sideline interview, expressed a mixed bag of feelings, “I think we targeted more than that after the first six overs but I’m really happy for the team,” he remarked to the broadcasters during the innings break. He also revealed a piece of strategy, implying that meticulous assessment of the pitch played a pivotal role, complemented by Travis Head’s impressive gameplay, which Sharma followed suit.

The post-match atmosphere at the press conference echoed a similar sentiment with a touch of humor. “We felt we could have hit a few balls better (laughs), so more of this is going to come,” Sharma added, hinting at potential improvements and a determined outlook for future matches.

Sharma’s optimism isn’t unfounded, given SRH’s current form and standing. The team, under the captaincy of Pat Cummins, has hit three of the four highest totals in this IPL season, largely owing to the powerful starts they’ve been getting. Sharma credits this to simple yet impactful directives from the coaching staff and the captain, “The message was pretty easy from the coaches and the captain: go and express yourself,” he explained.

This season has also seen a shift in opening partnerships. While David Warner and Jonny Bairstow used to be the regular faces at the top, the introduction of Travis Head alongside the Indian all-rounder has injected a new dynamism into the team’s approach. Sharma acknowledged the benefits of batting alongside Head, stating, “It has always been a pleasure since day 1.” This partnership allows Sharma to play more freely, as he feels less pressure and more support from the other end.

Their budding camaraderie off the field further strengthens this dynamic duo. “It’s joyful to watch Travis bat,” said Sharma, who also admits to being a great admirer of Head’s prowess in all formats of the game. The mutual respect and shared strategies have allowed them to strengthen their gameplay collectively.

Looking ahead, Sharma is not just relying on in-form partnerships but also on his rigorous preparations and strategic planning, especially when facing key opponents. “Personally, I try to plan really well for the spinners and the main bowlers of the other team. This match also, I was very careful against Kuldeep, I know he’s their main bowler; I have been watching his videos,” he detailed his meticulous approach. This level of dedication is supported by practice sessions with net and local bowlers that mimic the playing styles of upcoming adversaries.

Sharma’s current form and thoughtful insights reflect a player who is not just performing well but also evolving with each game. His goals are clear, and his mindset, focused. As SRH continues to make waves in the IPL, Abhishek Sharma seems set on not just meeting but exceeding expectations, one game at a time.
