Shikhar Dhawan, the prolific left-handed opening batsman, has announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket with immediate effect. This announcement marks the end of a stellar career that spanned over 13 years and saw Dhawan represent India in all three formats. Dhawan took to social media to share a heartfelt message with his fans and followers, confirming his exit from the cricketing world.

“It’s important to turn the page to move forward in a story, and in life. That’s why I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket,” Dhawan stated in his retirement video. He expressed a sense of fulfillment and gratitude for the journey, saying, “I’ve told myself to not feel sad that you won’t play for India again, but feel happy that you played for the country.”

Over his illustrious career, Dhawan became a mainstay in the Indian cricket team, playing 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is. His contribution to the sport is highlighted by the impressive runs he accumulated: 2315 in Tests, 6793 in ODIs, and 1579 in T20Is. Dhawan’s last appearance for India was in an ODI against Bangladesh at Chattogram in December 2022. His final T20I came much earlier, in July 2021 against Sri Lanka. Dhawan has been absent from the Test cricket scene since 2018. His last competitive game was in the IPL 2024, where he played for the Punjab Kings against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, but an injury cut short his season.

In his retirement announcement, Dhawan extended heartfelt thanks to his family, fans, childhood coaches, and the various Indian and IPL teams he has been a part of throughout his cricketing journey.

Dhawan’s rise to fame began in the 2004 U-19 World Cup, where he scored three centuries and amassed 505 runs, making a name for himself as a future star. As a key player for Delhi, alongside giants like Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, Dhawan’s position in the strong batting order was solidified. Known for his elegant cover drives and strong offside shots, he made his ODI debut for India in 2010 against Australia, although it was a day to forget as he was dismissed for a duck.

However, redemption came in March 2013 when Dhawan made his Test debut against Australia at Mohali.

. Unlike his ODI debut, this was a sensational innings where he smashed the fastest century on debut, reaching the landmark in just 85 deliveries. That was the beginning of a fruitful period for Dhawan, who went on to forge a powerful opening partnership with Rohit Sharma. He was instrumental in India’s triumph in the 2013 Champions Trophy in England, scoring 363 runs, including two centuries.

One of Dhawan’s most iconic performances came in the 2015 Cricket World Cup, where his 137-run innings against South Africa at the MCG remains etched in the memories of cricket fans. Known for his flair in ICC tournaments, Dhawan once again showcased his talent in the 2019 World Cup with a hundred against Australia. Unfortunately, a hairline fracture on his thumb ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament.

Dhawan also left an indelible mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over his 222-game IPL career, he scored 6769 runs and was an integral part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad team that won the championship in 2016. Forming a formidable opening partnership with David Warner, Dhawan’s contributions were pivotal.

In the latter part of his career, international appearances became less frequent, but his record as a captain showcases another facet of his leadership. Dhawan captained India in 15 games (12 ODIs and 3 T20Is), achieving a win-loss record of 8-5 with two no-results. He led India to series victories against Sri Lanka in 2021 and West Indies and South Africa in 2022. Dhawan also captained in the IPL for the Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad, though his success was mixed, with a win-loss record of 13-20.

As Dhawan steps away from the pitch, his legacy as one of India’s finest players is secure. His journey from a promising young talent to a revered international cricketer is a testament to his skill, perseverance, and passion for the game. Fans and cricketing peers alike will remember him for his outstanding contributions to Indian cricket and his unwavering spirit. Dhawan’s retirement marks the end of an era, but his impact on the sport will continue to inspire future generations.
