Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials announced on Monday that a final decision regarding Shakib Al Hasan’s participation in the upcoming Kanpur Test will be made following a thorough medical assessment. Shakib sustained an injury to his finger during the first Test against India, held in Chennai, when he was struck by a delivery from Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah. The injury necessitated immediate medical attention on the field.

Hannan Sarkar, a member of the BCB’s selection panel, provided some insight into the situation during a media interaction in Chennai on Monday. “We are heading to Kanpur tomorrow (Tuesday) and today is a day off. We will have two sessions afterward and we will judge after that regarding Shakib’s availability for the second Test. We don’t want to make a decision yet,” said Sarkar.

Sarkar emphasized the importance of the next two days regarding the evaluation of Shakib’s condition. “These two days, the physio has kept him under observation. When we get back to the ground, we will get the physio’s feedback. We have to think before picking Shakib for the next match, and there is time before the next match. We will see what condition he is in,” he added.

Bangladesh’s skipper, Najmul Hossain, also weighed in, asserting that Shakib’s absence as a bowler in the first Test was a tactical decision rather than one driven solely by injury. Hossain explained that other bowlers were performing well, which allowed Shakib to focus more on his batting. This explanation was echoed by Sarkar, who reiterated that Shakib had no prior issues with his finger before the start of the Chennai Test.

Addressing concerns about the recurrence of the injury, Sarkar clarified the situation further. “We know the pain in his hand is being discussed. It was not there before the match, and many have tried to explain it in different ways. But before the match, we got a 100 percent clearance from the physio before taking him. He was 100 percent fit then,” he said.

“You can’t say it’s an injury. The discomfort he felt in that finger was not there before the match. He felt that when he started to bowl,” Sarkar elaborated, indicating that the injury was unexpected and only became apparent during the game.

Shakib’s potential absence from the Kanpur Test would be a significant blow to Bangladesh, given his remarkable all-round abilities. His contributions with both bat and ball have been pivotal for Bangladesh’s cricketing fortunes over the years. As one of the few players with vast experience and proven track records in international cricket, Shakib’s presence is often seen as a cornerstone of the team’s strategy.

The injury saga comes at a crucial juncture for Bangladesh cricket, which is in the middle of a high-stakes series against a formidable Indian side. With the first Test already resulting in a challenging situation for Bangladesh, the potential loss of a key player like Shakib adds another layer of complexity to their preparations for the subsequent match in Kanpur.

Shakib’s journey has not been without its tribulations. Over the years, he has had his fair share of injuries and controversies, yet each time he has returned stronger, reaffirming his reputation as one of the modern greats of the game. His fitness and form are often seen as barometers of Bangladesh’s performance, underscoring his importance to the team.

As fans and analysts speculate about Shakib’s availability, the BCB’s cautious approach is understandable. Ensuring that key players are fit and ready is always a priority, particularly in a grueling series against high-caliber opponents like India. The final decision will hinge on the comprehensive evaluations by the medical team, who are tasked with the responsibility of providing the most accurate assessment of Shakib’s injury and recovery prospects.

The upcoming training sessions in Kanpur will undoubtedly be critical. They will not only serve as a rehearsal for the second Test but also be instrumental in determining the composition of Bangladesh’s playing squad. With the physio’s feedback being crucial, the whole cricketing fraternity waits with bated breath for the BCB’s final call on Shakib Al Hasan’s participation.

In the meantime, Bangladesh will be exploring contingency plans in case their star all-rounder is unable to recuperate in time. The team management might have to shuffle the squad and re-calibrate their strategies to ensure they remain competitive. The coming days will be pivotal for both Shakib and the Bangladesh cricket team as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
