The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the first T20 International of the series between India and Bangladesh, initially set to take place in Dharamsala, will now be played in Gwalior. The decision to shift the venue was prompted by “upgrades and renovation work being carried out by the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association in the dressing rooms,” according to a statement from the board.

Originally scheduled for October 6, the match will now be held at the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium. It marks a significant event for the city of Gwalior, as this will be the first international fixture hosted at this newly-constructed stadium. Moreover, this game will be the first international cricket match in Gwalior since legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar scored an iconic double hundred in an ODI against South Africa.

The BCCI’s decision to move the match comes amid logistical challenges and an urgent need for infrastructural improvements at the Dharamsala venue. This relocation underscores the complexities involved in organizing high-profile sports events and ensuring that facilities meet the required standards.

In another noteworthy development, the BCCI has also made a venue swap for the first and second T20 International matches against England. While the dates remain unchanged (January 22 and 25 respectively), the first match of the series will now take place in Kolkata, instead of the originally planned Chennai. Consequently, the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, which was earlier scheduled to host the series opener, will now host the second T20I.

The shift in venues for the England series was due to a request from the Kolkata Police to the Cricket Association of Bengal. The request was made in consideration of the prior commitments and obligations that the Kolkata Police have around Republic Day. The BCCI’s ability to accommodate such requests highlights the board’s flexibility and the importance of coordinating with local authorities to ensure the smooth conduct of matches.
