It’s been 53 days since the dramatic T20 World Cup final, and questions about how Aiden Markram is holding up remain on the minds of cricket fans worldwide. In a recent press conference from Guyana, Markram gave an insight into his emotional journey since that fateful day. “I should give it as much time as it needs,” he said. “It was a tough one to swallow at the time. Definitely since then till now, it’s got a bit better to handle; to deal with and to process and put to bed.”

Markram was recounting the events of June 29 at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. On that day, South Africa’s men’s team made history, albeit in a painful way—they reached a senior World Cup final for the first time ever, only to face the sting of defeat. India clinched the T20 World Cup title by a narrow margin of seven runs, leaving the South Africans heartbroken. The margin of victory wasn’t unusual; South Africa had both won and lost six of their previous 184 T20 internationals (T20Is) by the same margin and had 21 games decided by fewer runs, even tying one. But this loss was different, given the stakes and the setting.

“Luckily I was able to take some time to get away from the game, get away from cricket conversations that would spark the discussion once again,” Markram continued. “It was nice to get away from that and to reset. Each individual processes it pretty much to themselves. Probably the most important thing is making sure you’re at peace with how it all ended. So that you can move on and move forward.”

As the South African team prepares to face the West Indies in a series of three T20Is in Tarouba, Trinidad, starting this Friday, some members of their World Cup squad have returned while others have not. Among those who played in the final are Markram, Reeza Hendricks, and Tristan Stubbs. Markram and Stubbs have also been actively involved in a recent Test series against the West Indies, a series South Africa won 1-0 under the leadership of Temba Bavuma, who captains the ODI side as well.

Markram, who is South Africa’s T20I captain, reflected on the challenges and responsibilities that come with his role.

. “It’s not a hell of a big deal for me. The decision-makers, especially from a white-ball point of view, remain consistent. That allows for continuity in the team,” he said. “Faces will change and squads will change, but it’s important that we keep driving a consistent message to the guys and making sure that they feel backed as players. And that whatever they bring to the table is good enough for us as a team. So, it’s not too complicated. You take on whatever you get given and you try to make the absolute best of it and see where it gets you.”

Markram will undoubtedly be hoping for better outcomes in the upcoming matches in Tarouba than what transpired during the T20 World Cup. The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently labeled the Tarouba pitch as “unsatisfactory”—the second-lowest rating—citing its chronically inconsistent bounce. This pitch saw South Africa dismiss Afghanistan for a meager 56 runs in the semifinals before securing a nine-wicket victory. During the tournament, teams batting first at Tarouba were often bowled out between scores ranging from 40 to 95 in four out of five games played there. In the exception, West Indies were 30/5 against New Zealand before recovering to a total of 149/9.

Conditions seemed more favorable in a prior tour match the South Africans played against a West Indies Championship XI in Tarouba before the Test series. During that match, two centuries and six fifties were scored, with the teams achieving respective totals of 397 and 408/9. Markram himself shined, scoring 82 off 107 balls, with 56 of his runs coming in boundaries.

Reflecting on his experiences, Markram likely finds solace in days like those, compared to the heartbreak of June 29. Even a 3-0 win against West Indies in the coming days would hardly erase the sting of the World Cup final defeat. However, part of moving forward involves believing that such a painful loss won’t be his last final, and that future triumphs will bring happier days.
