Jasprit Bumrah became just the fifth Indian captain to take a five-wicket haul in Tests as India bundled out Australia for 104 to take a first-innings lead of 46 runs. That number could’ve been more if not for a stubborn final-wicket stand – the best of Australia’s riposte – between Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood worth 25 runs. They batted out 18 overs to get those runs before Starc fell right in time for the Lunch break.
Alex Carey came into the series as the leading run scorer in the Sheffield Shied for South Australia, with 452 runs in three innings. Heading into Day 2, he was viewed as the saviour after the top-order had been dismantled with ease on the opening day. Bumrah however, rendered that moot with the first ball he bowled on the second morning, getting the wicketkeeper-batter to nick one behind to Rishabh Pant.
From the other end, Harshit Rana kept up his zip and aggression from the opening day. There was needle and banter about bowling speeds with Starc, who he won the IPL alongside earlier this year. But Rana’s probling hard lengths continued to make the lower-order batters uncomfortable. Eventually, Nathan Lyon gloved one while trying to evade a short ball, straight to KL Rahul at third slip.
Hazlewood and Starc then survived several near-misses to frustrate India. They got past the relentless spell from Bumrah and Rana that lasted 13 overs, forcing India to switch to Mohammed Siraj and Nitish Reddy. The older and softer the ball got and the longer Starc stayed put, the more he confidently middled deliveries. Meanwhile, Hazlewood did enough to duck out of short balls that the pacers repeatedly bowled to him with a leg slip in place. Together they dragged Australia past 100.
With no respite in sight, Bumrah soon brought himself and Rana back and found a way through. The debutant got Starc to top-edge a pull shot, that Rishabh Pant ran forward to pouch.
Brief Scores: India 150 (Nitish Reddy 41, Rishabh Pant 38; Josh Hazlewood 4-29, Mitchell Marsh 2-12, Mitchell Marsh 2-14, Pat Cummins 2-67) lead Australia 104 (Mitchell Starc 26; Jasprit Bumrah 5-30, Harshit Rana 3-48) by 46 runs
