Left-arm medium-fast bowler Barinder Sran has announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket at the age of 31. In a heartfelt message shared on his Instagram page, Sran expressed his gratitude for a career that, while brief on the international stage, was filled with unforgettable experiences.
“As I officially hang up my cricket boots, I look back at my journey with a heart full of gratitude,” Sran wrote. “Cricket has gifted me innumerable and incredible experiences. Fast bowling soon became my lucky charm and opened doors to represent prestigious IPL franchises, ultimately culminating in the highest honor of representing India in 2016.”
Sran’s journey from local cricket fields to international stadiums is a testament to his hard work and dedication. His international debut came in January 2016 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, featuring in six One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and two Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) for India, all within a span of just six months. Despite the short duration, Sran made a significant impact. In ODIs, he took seven wickets, showing promise with the new ball and his left-arm angle, which is traditionally prized in cricket.
One of the highlights of his international career was his debut in the T20I format on the tour of Zimbabwe in June 2016. Sran not only made his presence felt but also earned the Player of the Match award in his first game for his remarkable bowling figures of 4 for 10, which helped bowl out Zimbabwe for 99. This performance remains etched in the memories of cricket fans and was a testament to his potential in the shorter format of the game.
Reflecting on his career, Sran mentioned, “Even though my international career was brief, the memories created will be forever cherished. I am eternally grateful to the almighty for getting me the right coaches and management, who have supported me throughout my journey.”
Beyond the international stage, Sran enjoyed a diverse career in domestic circuits and the Indian Premier League (IPL). His IPL journey saw him donning the jerseys of four renowned franchises: Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kings XI Punjab, and Mumbai Indians. Between 2015 and 2019, Sran made 24 IPL appearances and took 18 wickets. His economy rate of 9.40 in the IPL speaks to the challenges he faced but also highlights his moments of brilliance.

Sran’s domestic career also had its moments. Before making his ODI debut, he had played only eight List A games, which is a testament to his rapid rise in Indian cricket. However, injuries and stiff competition meant that his first-class cricket appearances were limited. He played his last first-class game in 2019 and his last List A game in 2021.
The left-arm pacer’s journey in cricket began in Punjab, where he honed his skills in the local leagues, eventually catching the eyes of selectors with his pace and swing. His ability to swing the ball both ways and extract bounce from the pitch made him a promising talent. His stint in the IPL with various franchises helped him learn the nuances of bowling in different conditions and against top international batters.
Sran’s announcement has led to an outpouring of admiration and best wishes from fellow cricketers, fans, and cricket boards. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) acknowledged his contributions and wished him success in his future endeavors. Many former teammates took to social media to reminisce about their time with Sran, recalling not just his skills on the field but also his sportsmanship and dedication.
As Sran steps away from active play, his next steps remain eagerly anticipated. While he has not explicitly mentioned his future plans, there is speculation that he might explore coaching or mentoring roles, given his experience and the respect he commands among younger players.
In his retirement note, Sran expressed his thanks to everyone who had been part of his journey. “I am grateful to my family, friends, coaches, teammates, and fans for their unwavering support and encouragement. This journey would not have been possible without them.”
Barinder Sran’s retirement marks the end of a chapter filled with promise, dedication, and memorable performances. Though his time on the international stage was brief, his contributions to Indian cricket and the IPL will be remembered. As he transitions to the next phase of his life, the cricketing community extends its best wishes for his future endeavors.
