Barinder Sran, the left-arm medium-fast bowler who burst onto the international cricket scene in 2016, has announced his retirement from both international and domestic cricket. At the age of 31, Sran took to social media to share his decision, reflecting on his unique journey in the sport.
“As I officially hang up my cricket boots, I look back at my journey with a heart full of gratitude,” Sran wrote on his Instagram page. “Cricket has gifted me innumerable and incredible experiences. Fast bowling soon became my lucky charm and opened doors to represent prestigious IPL franchises, ultimately culminating in the highest honor of representing India in 2016.”
Sran’s career, although relatively short, was marked by significant milestones. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut under the captaincy of the legendary MS Dhoni in January 2016 against Australia in Perth. In his brief ODI career, spanning just six matches, Sran managed to capture seven wickets. His performance was steady, demonstrating his potential despite the limited opportunities.
Reflecting further on his career, Sran expressed his gratitude to those who supported him. “Even though my international career was brief, the memories created will be forever cherished. I am eternally grateful to the almighty for getting me the right coaches and management, who have supported me throughout my journey,” he added.
In June the same year, Sran made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut, once again under Dhoni, during a tour of Zimbabwe. It was in this tour that he delivered one of his most memorable performances, clinching the Player of the Match award in his very first game. His figures of 4 for 10 were instrumental in bowling out the hosts for just 99 runs, securing a decisive victory for India.
Looking back, Sran’s venture into the world of professional cricket was nothing short of remarkable. He had played only eight List A games before his surprising call-up to the Indian national team. Such a rapid ascent reflected not only his skill but also the faith that the selectors and coaches had in his abilities.

Beyond the international arena, Sran was also a notable player in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over the years, he represented four major IPL franchises: Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kings XI Punjab, and Mumbai Indians. Between 2015 and 2019, he appeared in 24 IPL matches, capturing 18 wickets with an economy rate of 9.40. While his IPL career had its highs and lows, Sran’s presence in the league underscored his versatility and skill as a bowler.
The transition from a budding cricketer to representing top-tier teams and the national squad is a journey filled with dedication, hard work, and unyielding passion. Sran’s story is a testament to this. Despite his injuries and other challenges, he continued to persevere, making significant contributions whenever given the chance.
Sran’s last appearance in first-class cricket came in 2019, and his final List A game was in 2021. These final years of his career saw him grapple with form and fitness, leading to a reduced number of appearances. Nonetheless, every time he stepped onto the field, he did so with the same zeal and commitment that marked the start of his career.
Looking back at his achievements, it’s clear that Sran’s career, though brief, had a lasting impact. His exploits on the field, especially his spirited performances in critical matches, will be remembered. His story also serves as an inspiration for young cricketers who aspire to play at the highest level, showing that talent combined with hard work can lead to remarkable achievements.
As Barinder Sran steps away from the cricket field, he leaves behind a legacy of resilience and dedication. His journey from a small-town cricketer to representing India on the global stage is nothing short of inspiring. The cricketing fraternity now bids farewell to a player who gave his all to the sport he loved, wishing him success in all his future endeavors. As Sran himself aptly put it, the memories created during this journey will indeed be forever cherished.
