In a candid reflection on the disheartening performance of the Bangladesh national cricket team in their recently concluded series against India, batsman Towhid Hridoy expressed significant concern over the team’s all-around deficiencies. The seasoned Bangladeshi squad struggled to find footing against a relatively young Indian team, ultimately suffering a 3-0 defeat in the T20I series, a result that left the team and its supporters yearning for introspection and growth.

Despite the wealth of experience in their roster, Bangladesh was soundly outplayed in all facets of the game. “We lacked in all departments,” admitted Hridoy, acknowledging the team’s failure to harmonize their batting and bowling efforts. “One day the batting was good but the bowling wasn’t, and when the bowling was good, the batting wasn’t,” he reported, to a cluster of concerned journalists following their third consecutive loss.

A daunting challenge for the team was adaptation to the pitch conditions encountered during the series. “We don’t usually play on wickets like this. I’m not making excuses, but the more we play on such wickets, the better we’ll get,” Hridoy emphasized. This highlights the urgent need for Bangladeshi cricketers to gain exposure to a wider variety of playing surfaces, a step deemed critical for their international success.

Bangladesh’s struggle was most evident during the final T20I at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, where they suffered a humiliating 133-run loss. According to Hridoy, the root of this downfall lay in the repeated failures of their top-order batsmen, a critical weakness that cost them dearly in every game. The absence of consistent performances from the top four batsmen was a glaring issue; when runs didn’t flow from these key positions, challenging totals could not be posted.

On a historic night for the hosts, Bangladesh’s pursuit of a mammoth 298 runs ended in disappointment as they managed only 164 for 7. This defeat by a margin of 133 runs now stands as Bangladesh’s largest by runs, eclipsing the previous record of a 104-run loss to South Africa in 2022. The series commenced with India clinching a seven-wicket victory in the first game and continued with an 86-run triumph in the next.

Hridoy does not believe the team is fundamentally incapable, but shines a light on the necessity of game adaptability and skill enhancement. “I wouldn’t say we’re too far behind. We’re not this bad as a side. It’s more about how we can perform on flat wickets,” Hridoy pointed out, expressing that most players grapple with reading and reacting to diverse wicket conditions outside their typical venues. “We mostly play in Mirpur. If we play in Chattogram, we know what the wicket will be like, but in other places, the wicket varies each day.”

Using India as a benchmark, Hridoy outlined a path for Bangladesh to emulate, focusing on strategic play on flat wickets coupled with comprehensive skill improvement across all departments. He urged that these enhancements must be backed by frequent and varied exposure to different pitch conditions to foster day-by-day amelioration, admitting, however, that “it won’t happen overnight.”

It’s not just the playing conditions that need addressing, according to Hridoy. He acknowledged the robust skill set and holistic team performance seen in India, attributing their dominance in part to their advanced and well-rounded capabilities on the cricket field. “It’s not just about the wickets; we also need to improve our skills,” he declared. Acknowledging India’s prowess, he added, “India is a strong team, and this is their home ground. They’re good in all aspects and ahead in terms of skill too.”

While Bangladesh was left grappling with questions after this crushing defeat, Hridoy’s reflective remarks present a potential roadmap for recovery and growth as they seek to bridge the gap and establish themselves more firmly on the international stage. Shifting the focus toward tactical variety, skill enhancement, and depth in adaptability could be the keys that unlock future successes for the team.
