Abhishek Nayar, India’s assistant coach, has expressed his unwavering support for KL Rahul, banking on the talented cricketer to rejuvenate his Test career, which has experienced a tumultuous trajectory over the past decade. Since making his debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 2014, Rahul has been a subject of debate, frequently in and out of the side due to his inconsistent performance.
The flair and brilliance of KL Rahul have shone through on numerous occasions – a century on his second Test appearance at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), and subsequent tons in Colombo, Kingston, London, and Centurion (twice). However, these sparks of genius have often been overshadowed by a general inconsistency, reflected in his average of 34.12, which stands as the lowest among Indian batsmen who have played 50 or more Tests.
Primarily an opener for the majority of his career, Rahul’s recent role has seen him transition to the middle order – a move Nayar believes could help him harness his potential and deliver the performances expected of him. “When you are playing for India, inspiration isn’t something you need,” Nayar stated emphatically on Thursday, the day before the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur. “Sometimes, it’s just about direction, and I feel KL has a clear understanding of his game.”
Indeed, KL Rahul’s recent exploits in South Africa, where he played some pivotal knocks, have not gone unnoticed. “We are very hopeful,” Nayar said, referring to the discussions he and Gautam Gambhir have had with Rahul. “These transitions sometimes take time, but we believe in KL’s capabilities.”
In the first Test in Chennai, KL Rahul showed glimpses of his potential with scores of 16 and an unbeaten 22 in the second innings, where the team was pushing for a declaration. Despite the modest tally, Nayar saw promising signs. “The way he batted in the second innings is the calibre of cricket we expect and hope from him,” he emphasized, suggesting that such performances, though brief, showcased Rahul’s readiness to step up.
Rahul’s inclusion in place of Sarfaraz Khan at No. 6 has been a topic of discussion, especially given Sarfaraz’s stellar domestic performances against England, amassing three half-centuries in five innings. Sarfaraz’s long wait for a national call-up, underscored by years of grinding it out at the domestic level, speaks volumes of his tenacity. Nonetheless, Nayar insists on the importance of clear communication and managing the expectations of players in such scenarios.
.
“The communication is very clear,” Nayar affirmed, alluding to the conversations between the coaching staff and the players. “Every player knows that there will be times when they will have to make way for someone else. This happens in every cricketer’s career.”
Despite Sarfaraz’s omissions from the Test squad in Kanpur, he was seen extending his net sessions alongside teammates Dhruv Jurel and Yashasvi Jaiswal, demonstrating his commitment and readiness to grab any future opportunities. “It’s essential to have a growth mindset. Our role as support staff is to ensure players are ready to perform when they return,” Nayar added.
With an impending Test in Kanpur, India’s batting lineup appears set, with Rahul likely retaining his spot. However, there is a possibility of tweaking the bowling lineup, with an additional spinner potentially being in the mix. The weather forecast, predicting rain over multiple days, adds another layer of complexity to team selection. Addressing these contingencies, Nayar remarked, “To be honest, I don’t know which surface we are going to play on yet. Both the pitches look promising, and Kanpur is known for good tracks. We have to wait and see how the conditions unfold.”
The uncertainty surrounding pitch behavior and weather conditions means decisions will be contingent on the morning’s conditions on the day of the match. “A lot will depend on how the pitch behaves with the given weather conditions. In Test cricket, the pitch can significantly influence the game,” Nayar noted.
As India prepares to take on Bangladesh in Kanpur, the spotlight will remain on KL Rahul and his endeavor to solidify his spot in the team, translating potential into consistent performances. With the backing of the coaching staff and a clearly defined role, Rahul has a prime opportunity to revitalize his Test career and meet the lofty expectations placed upon him.
