When faced with a moral quandary, the instinctual choice might lean toward the path of least resistance. This is precisely the conundrum that Amit Venugopal’s thought-provoking short film, “The Cycle,” intricately examines. The film invites viewers to ponder the ramifications of choosing the easy way out when confronted with difficult circumstances.

The plot unfolds on an isolated roadway where a distracted individual, engrossed in typing on his mobile phone while driving, inadvertently strikes a cyclist ahead. In a moment of panic, the driver steps out to check on the victim, only to be met with the eerie absence of the cyclist, leaving behind just the mangled bicycle.

As if by fate, a mysterious piece of paper presents itself near the cycle, with instructions that offer an apparent escape from the predicament. The note bears a phone number that promises a solution to any problem. Without hesitation, the driver places a call, pleading to rectify the situation without involving law enforcement. The voice on the other end acquiesces to assist, but this decision’s consequences remain to be seen.

“The Cycle” is not just a narrative about the moral compass; it is an exploration of human nature and the inclination to avoid hardship, regardless of the ethical cost. “The film is an attempt to explore the concept of morality. It deals with our basic instinct to get out of a situation in the easiest way possible. But, sooner or later, we will face the consequence of making that decision,” elaborates Amit Venugopal. Working with Envestnet in Thiruvananthapuram, Amit brings a personal touch to the film’s ethos, drawing from his background and beliefs.

This 13.32-minute film, despite certain limitations, has garnered appreciation for its unique treatment of the subject matter. Amit describes the setting as “bizarre,” and rightly so, as the film masterfully weaves mystery and supernatural elements into its fabric. This touch of the arcane sets the stage for a more compelling narrative. Amit is no stranger to storytelling, having previously directed the short film “Unheard” in 2020. The project, “Unheard,” was part of ‘Chiri,’ a tele-counseling initiative launched by the Kerala Government during the lockdown for the mental well-being of individuals under the age of 18.

In “The Cycle,” Amit himself plays a role, alongside performances by his colleagues. The film is set against the scenic backdrop of Vellayani in Thiruvananthapuram and was shot over the span of four days. The visual narrative is enhanced by Ramshi K’s cinematography and the accompanying soundtrack by Jomon M John, both of which contribute to the film’s gripping atmosphere.

Thriller and mystery aficionados may find “The Cycle” particularly appealing for its genre elements. Amit’s affinity for suspenseful storytelling is evident in the film’s pacing and plot twists, offering viewers an immersive experience that keeps them guessing until the very end.

The short film is currently accessible on YouTube for worldwide audiences. It stands as a testament to Amit Venugopal’s directorial skills and his ability to convey profound messages about human behavior and morality through the medium of film. As viewers watch “The Cycle,” they are not only entertained but also invited to introspect about the choices they make in life, and more importantly, the consequences that follow.
