In an emphatic display of cricketing grit and determination, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have become the first team in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season to secure a spot in the playoffs. The resilience and prowess of the KKR team were on full display as they claimed a pivotal 18-run victory against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at their iconic home ground, Eden Gardens. This victory marked KKR’s ninth win of the season, solidifying their position as formidable contenders.
The much-anticipated match faced a significant challenge from the weather gods as persistent evening rain led to the contest being shortened to a 16-overs-a-side affair. MI won the toss under tricky conditions and opted to field first. The match started with a bang as Phil Salt smashed Nuwan Thushara’s very first delivery over long-off for a colossal six. However, his aggressive intent got the better of him later in the over, as a mistimed shot resulted in him being caught by a fielder in the deep.
Jasprit Bumrah was introduced into the attack in the second over, and he wasted no time in making an impact. Sunil Narine misjudged a full delivery, which swung in sharply, crashing into the stumps and leaving KKR reeling at 10 for two. At this juncture, KKR seemed to be in a crisis.
Amidst the early setbacks, Venkatesh Iyer exemplified the adage, “Attack is the best form of defence.” Despite KKR’s precarious position, Iyer ensured they fought back with aggressive intent. During the fourth over, bowled by Bumrah, Venkatesh had an injury scare but bounced back to launch an assault, striking two fours and a six to rebuild KKR’s innings.
Shreyas Iyer’s stay at the crease was short-lived as he was bowled by Anshul Kamboj around his legs. Nitish Rana, returning from injury, joined Venkatesh in the middle to stabilize the innings. Despite no big partnerships, crucial contributions came at various intervals. Venkatesh’s blistering 21-ball 42 set the tempo, but he was dismissed just when he appeared set for a big score. Suryakumar Yadav caught him off Piyush Chawla’s bowling in the ninth over.
Andre Russell made his presence felt immediately, hitting his second ball for a towering six. Nitish Rana complemented him with regular boundaries, maintaining the innings’ momentum. Unfortunately, Rana’s innings ended at 33 due to a run-out in the 12th over, briefly stalling KKR’s progress.
The late-order cameos were significant in pushing KKR closer to a competitive total.

Ramandeep Singh’s unbeaten 17 off eight balls, capped by a six off the last delivery, saw KKR finish at 157 for seven. Among MI’s bowlers, Piyush Chawla stood out, claiming two wickets for 28 runs in his three overs. Bumrah secured two for 39 in his four overs, regaining the purple cap, and Kamboj was economical, with one for 24 in three overs.
In reply, MI’s innings kicked off in explosive fashion. The powerplay saw Ishan Kishan spearhead the attack, racing to 37 off just 17 balls, carving up the KKR bowlers. MI looked firmly in control at 59 by the fifth over. Even Sunil Narine was not spared, with Kishan hitting a six and a four in his over.
Despite the blazing start, KKR’s spinners wrestled back control during the middle overs. Narine removed the dangerous Ishan Kishan when he mismanaged a shot to deep midwicket, departing for 40 in the seventh over. Rohit Sharma soon followed, falling to a Varun Chakaravarthy delivery, with Narine catching it at short fine-leg. By the 10th over, MI’s pace had slowed considerably to 81 for two, with Suryakumar Yadav keeping their hope afloat.
However, Andre Russell quickly extinguished those hopes, dismissing Suryakumar with a pull shot caught at deep square-leg in the 11th over. KKR kept tightening the noose with regular wickets. Chakaravarthy remained economical, finishing with two wickets for 17 runs in his four overs. Narine finished with one for 21 in three overs, playing a pivotal role alongside Russell, who claimed crucial scalps, including Tim David for a duck.
Tilak Varma mounted a valiant fight-back for MI, keeping the chase alive even as the required run rate ballooned. With 41 runs needed off the last two overs, Naman Dhir’s aggressive batting briefly rekindled MI’s hopes. Yet, the final over saw Harshit Rana steal the spotlight, dismissing Dhir and ending Varma’s resistance to secure the win.
The electrifying atmosphere of Eden Gardens was a testament to KKR’s unforgettable season, with the home crowd cheering their team to another memorable victory. Ending their home season with five wins out of seven matches, KKR have set high expectations as they move forward into the playoffs.
