The Mumbai Indians (MI) surged to an emphatic seven-wicket victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at their fortress, Wankhede Stadium, marking their fourth win in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. This remarkable victory was spearheaded by a scintillating century from Suryakumar Yadav, with invaluable support from Tilak Varma during their crucial run-chase.
In line with the prevailing trend in the TATA IPL 2024, MI’s skipper won the toss and opted to bowl first, pitting their bowling prowess against SRH’s high-octane batting lineup. MI introduced Anshul Kamboj, a promising right-arm medium pacer, into their arsenal. SRH, aiming to fortify their batting, brought back the experienced Mayank Agarwal.
The SRH openers, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, kicked off aggressively during the powerplay, finding boundaries with regular ease. Drama unfurled in the fifth over when Kamboj took the ball, and Head decided to attack him straight away. After initially smashing a six, Head was bowled, but the delivery was a no-ball, giving him a reprieve. Seizing the opportunity, Head struck the resultant free-hit for a four and followed it up with another boundary. Jasprit Bumrah then struck, dismissing Abhishek (11 off 16) caught behind just before the conclusion of the powerplay.
Kamboj returned to the spotlight in the eighth over, bowling Mayank Agarwal. This set the tone for SRH’s innings as they struggled to stitch together partnerships, constantly losing wickets. Apart from their opening partnership of 56, none of their other partnerships crossed the 50-run mark. Many SRH batters got starts but failed to convert them into significant scores. The critical blow came when Head was dismissed for 48 in the 12th over, leaving SRH reeling. At one juncture, they were teetering at 136 for eight in the 17th over, compelling them to bring in Sanvir Singh as the impact player.
Pat Cummins’ aggressive batting provided a late flourish for SRH, scoring 35 off just 17 balls, including two sixes and two fours, pushing their total to a competitive 173.
. The last-wicket partnership of 37 runs proved pivotal, offering their bowlers some semblance of a target to defend. Captain Hardik Pandya with three for 31 and Piyush Chawla with three for 33 emerged as MI’s standout bowlers.
MI’s pursuit of 174 began on a strong note, with openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma racing to 26 inside two overs. However, SRH struck back as Marco Jansen dismissed Ishan. The pressure increased when Rohit top-edged a caught-and-bowled attempt, followed by Naman Dhir’s early dismissal, leaving MI struggling at 31 for three in the fifth over.
However, Suryakumar Yadav, demonstrating his class, counter-attacked immediately. His innings set the tone with an early drive for four off Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Tilak Varma then showcased his prowess, attacking Pat Cummins in the sixth over and taking MI to 52 for three by the end of the powerplay.
With field restrictions easing, Suryakumar’s aggressive approach intensified. He dismantled Marco Jansen in the seventh over, amassing 22 runs with two sixes and two fours. Suryakumar’s dominance continued unabated, providing no room for SRH bowlers to regroup.
Tilak Varma played the perfect supporting role, anchoring his end while Suryakumar unleashed an array of impressive shots from the other, much to the delight of the MI fans. Suryakumar’s half-century came off just 30 balls, and he accelerated ruthlessly, reaching his century off just 21 further deliveries. His memorable innings culminated with a towering six off T Natarajan in the 18th over, sealing the victory for MI with 16 deliveries remaining.
