In a significant development within the Indian cricketing framework, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released the details of the Indian squad set to embark on an all-format tour to South Africa. This announcement arrives as the Indian cricket establishment refines its strategies in anticipation of the T20 World Cup 2024.
The transition from the team currently engaged in a series against Australia to the one that will challenge South Africa in the T20I series has brought about substantial changes. Notably, Suryakumar Yadav is set to retain his position as India’s T20I captain given that regular skipper Rohit Sharma will be absent from the white-ball segment of the South African tour and Hardik Pandya is sidelined due to injury.
Among the key modifications to the squad list are four crucial player inclusions: Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj. Correspondingly, there are four players who will not continue from the Australia T20Is. All-rounders Axar Patel and Shivam Dube, along with pacers Prasidh Krishna and Avesh Khan, have been omitted from the squad traveling to South Africa.
Star batsman Shubman Gill is all set to make his return to the T20 format, providing India with another opening option alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Ishan Kishan. Gill was last seen in India’s T20I fixture against the West Indies before the World Cup 2023. The squad also welcomes the return of the versatile Ravindra Jadeja, who has been out of the T20 domain for 15 months. Appointed as vice-captain for the upcoming series, Jadeja’s last T20I appearance was at the T20 Asia Cup in 2022.
Spin bowler Kuldeep Yadav makes a comeback after resting from the T20I confrontations with Australia post-World Cup festivities. A seasoned player, Kuldeep’s craft will indeed bolster the spin department as India gears up for the South African pitches. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj, who last donned the Indian jersey in the T20I format in November 2022 during the New Zealand tour, is also recalled to fortify the pace attack.
Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar, who were recently called up to India’s T20I squad for the latter T20Is against Australia, also find their names on the roster facing South Africa. Iyer continues as the vice-captain for the matches against Australia, while Chahar replaces Mukesh Kumar—currently taking leave for his marriage—during the aforementioned series.
Suryakumar Yadav leads the pack as Captain, with the list of players for the current Australia series and the subsequent South Africa series provided below:
