Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials have announced that the decision regarding Shakib Al Hasan’s participation in the upcoming Kanpur Test will be determined following a thorough medical assessment. This development comes after Shakib sustained an injury to his finger while batting during the first Test against India in Chennai.
The injury occurred when Shakib was struck by a delivery from Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, prompting immediate medical attention. As a pivotal player for Bangladesh, Shakib’s condition has become a significant concern for the team management and fans alike.
In a media interaction on Monday in Chennai, BCB’s selection panel member Hannan Sarkar provided an update on the situation. “We are heading to Kanpur tomorrow (Tuesday) and today is a day off. We will have two sessions afterwards and we will judge after that (regarding Shakib’s availability in the second Test) and we don’t want to make a decision yet,” Sarkar stated.
Sarkar elaborated that the team’s physio has placed Shakib under close observation for two days to monitor his progress. “These two days, the physio has kept him under observation. When we get back to the ground, we will get the physio’s feedback. We have to think before picking Shakib for the next match and there is time before the next match. We will see what condition he is in,” he added.
Bangladesh’s skipper Najmul Hossain echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that Shakib was not utilized as a bowler in the first Test primarily because the other bowlers were performing well. He also downplayed concerns regarding Shakib’s injury, underscoring that the all-rounder had been given a clean bill of health before the start of the series.
“We know the pain in his hand is being discussed. It was not there before the match and many have tried to explain it in different ways. But before the match, we got a 100 percent clearance from the physio before taking him.
. He was 100 percent fit then,” Najmul Hossain remarked, supporting Hannan Sarkar’s statements.
Sarkar further clarified, “You can’t say it’s an injury. The discomfort he felt in that finger was not there before the match. He felt that when he started to bowl.”
The debate over Shakib’s fitness has triggered discussions among cricket analysts and supporters, given his influential role in the team. Known for his all-round capabilities, Shakib’s presence can significantly tilt the balance in favour of Bangladesh.
While the team awaits the medical team’s feedback, cricket enthusiasts are hopeful that Shakib will make a swift recovery. His participation is deemed crucial for the second Test in Kanpur, especially after the intense contest in Chennai.
The BCB’s cautious approach in handling Shakib’s situation illustrates the importance of athlete welfare and the need for careful consideration before making any hasty decisions. With vital matches lined up, the emphasis on fitness and readiness ensures that players are not rushed back to action prematurely, which could risk aggravating injuries.
The cricket fraternity keenly awaits the physio’s report, which will play a decisive role in determining Shakib’s availability for the second Test. As Hannan Sarkar highlighted, there is still some time before the next match, allowing the board to make an informed decision based on the most accurate medical assessment.
Meanwhile, team preparations continue in earnest as they gear up for the challenging Indian tour. The team’s strategy and composition for the upcoming Test will be closely watched, considering the recent developments.
In sum, the BCB’s final call on Shakib Al Hasan’s participation in the Kanpur Test will hinge on the forthcoming medical evaluation. As fans and analysts wait anxiously for the official decision, the overarching priority remains the well-being of one of Bangladesh’s star players. The broader implications of Shakib’s inclusion or absence will unfold as the second Test draws near, with the cricket world watching with bated breath.
