Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) clinched a dominant 10-wicket victory over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Match 57 of the TATA IPL 2024 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma’s explosive batting display not only underscored why SRH’s batting lineup is one of the most formidable in the tournament but also etched the performance into the annals of IPL history. Chasing a target of 166, SRH accomplished the seemingly insurmountable feat in a blistering 9.4 overs, setting the stage for what can be described as a batting masterclass.
The foundation of SRH’s emphatic victory was laid during the powerplay – a period they’ve consistently dominated this season. Accumulating a staggering 107 runs within the first six overs, SRH effectively sealed the match’s outcome before the end of the powerplay itself. LSG’s bowlers, with no room for error, found themselves on the receiving end of relentless aggression from the left-handed opening duo.
Despite starting on a relatively subdued note with just eight runs in the first over, SRH turned the tide dramatically in the second. Abhishek Sharma led the charge, striking four consecutive boundaries off Yash Thakur. When K Gowtham stepped up to bowl the third over, Travis Head unleashed his fury, amassing 22 runs, including three sixes and a four. The subsequent introduction of Ravi Bishnoi in the fourth over did nothing to stem the torrent of runs, as SRH plundered runs with impunity. Head’s blistering form saw him reaching a 16-ball half-century in the fifth over, which yielded an additional 23 runs.
By the end of the powerplay, Thakur’s final over saw SRH surging past 100, with Abhishek going toe-to-toe with Head. Even after the field spread post-powerplay, any hopes of respite for LSG were quickly dashed. Head opened the seventh over with a remarkable six over mid-wicket, followed by Abhishek reaching his fifty with a six over long-on. The boundaries flowed unabated, irrespective of who bowled. The unrelenting tempo saw Head finishing unbeaten on 89 off 30 balls and Abhishek on 75 not out off 28 balls. SRH’s innings featured an astonishing 16 fours and 14 sixes, leaving LSG’s bowling unit shell-shocked and their records marred.

Earlier in the day, SRH’s bowling unit also impressed by restricting LSG to 165. Wickets fell at regular intervals, destabilizing LSG’s top order. It was only through a strategic partnership between Ayush Badoni (55 not out off 30 balls) and Nicholas Pooran (48 not out off 26 balls) that LSG managed to post a somewhat competitive total. Their unbeaten 99-run stand came as a stark contrast to LSG’s sluggish start and solidified their middle-order resilience.
Initially, it was Bhuvneshwar Kumar who applied the brakes to LSG’s brisk start. Bhuvneshwar’s first three overs yielded just seven runs while also accounting for the key wickets of Quinton de Kock and Marcus Stoinis. LSG limped to 27 for two at the end of the powerplay, necessitating a rebuild spearheaded by Krunal Pandya and KL Rahul.
Krunal attempted to up the ante in the eighth over, hitting Jaydev Unadkat for two sixes, but overall, LSG continued to struggle with a run rate hovering below six an over. Their problems compounded with the fall of KL Rahul for 29, caught out at deep off Pat Cummins. Pandya’s dismissal for 24, courtesy a run-out in the 12th over, brought Pooran and Badoni together at the crease.
While Pooran opted for a measured and experienced approach, Badoni took it upon himself to inject a dose of aggression into LSG’s innings. The defining moment came during the 14th over when Badoni took T Natarajan to task, racking up three boundaries and swinging the momentum slightly in LSG’s favor. From the 14th over onwards, LSG managed to score consistently over 10 runs per over, aside from Bhuvneshwar’s final five-run over. Bhuvneshwar’s impressive spell concluded with figures of two for 12, offering a stark contrast to the later onslaught by SRH’s openers.
Badoni achieved his fifty in the penultimate over of the innings, clocking it off just 28 balls. The final two overs saw a flourish from LSG, amassing 34 runs, including 19 off Pat Cummins’ last over, propelling them to a total of 165. Given their recovery from the early setbacks, LSG might have hoped for a fighting chance in their defense. However, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma ensured that SRH’s response was swift and brutal, bringing the game to an explosive finish.
