In the IPL’s expanded 10-team format, the path to the playoffs is tougher than ever. Historically, since the league’s expansion in 2022, a minimum of 16 points has generally been necessary to secure a playoff spot—translating to at least eight wins. Currently, with only one win to their name, RCB faces a steep uphill battle.
Historically, from IPL 2018 to 2021, 14 points were sometimes enough to scrape through to the playoffs. In 2019, for example, Sunrisers Hyderabad advanced to the playoffs with just 12 points. Such anomalies, however, have become increasingly rare with the addition of two new teams in 2022, reducing the odds of making it to the playoffs from 50% to 40%.
For RCB, their strategy must now focus solely on victory in each of their remaining six games. Achieving 14 points might not guarantee a playoff spot but will give them a fighting chance, especially if they can significantly improve their net run rate in the process.
Looking ahead, the team needs to address its early batting collapses and tighten fielding during crucial moments. Consistency in performance and strategic game planning in upcoming matches will be key to turning their fortunes around.
Moreover, individual brilliance such as that displayed by Sharma in the final over against KKR, needs to be harnessed and made a regular feature of their gameplay. The role of seasoned players like Kohli and du Plessis will be crucial in mentoring and stabilising the younger squad members during high-pressure situations.
As RCB gears up for the remainder of the season, the team’s management and coaching staff will need to recalibrate their tactics and possibly make tough lineup decisions to optimize performance. Fans remain hopeful, supporting their team passionately, but with a pragmatic understanding of the challenging road ahead.
